In 1936 the Salford Artist L. S. Lowry accompanied his aunt on a tour of Scotland, during which he produces many sketches and from which, in 1937 he produced his oil paintings of Pulteneytown, in Wick, Caithness, titled "Old House, Wick" and "The Steps, Wick".

The Steps, known locally as "the Black Stairs", connect the upper and lower areas of Pulteneytown.
