"Light of the North" Lantern Procession, September 11th 2004

Anne Webster, Wick Youth Club and Sue Jane Taylor, Lead Artist THI Lower Pulteneytown Regeneration Project organised a series of summer and early autumn workshops based at the Wick Youth Club. This involved young people creating withy-lit lanterns for the evening town procession which officially opened a triangle of New Media projections in the town and harbour and quarry (These projections have been created by community involvement) and marked the start of the Rural Voices Community Consultation.

Kay Smith, a performance artist based in the Highlands, led these workshops. The workshops were based at the Wick Youth Club from a pool of 500 young people on their books and also at the Wick High School. These workshops enabled the young people to work alongside a professional artist and learn new skills and techniques in creating lanterns. These workshops linked up with summer dance and drumming workshops run by Highland Council's schools programme, organised by Tom Bryan Caithness Arts Development Officer and Nicky Burns Highland Council Cultural Co-ordinator and ran by dance instructor Carol Webster and drumming instructor. On the night two young professional fire twirlers, hot from the Edinburgh Festival, led the procession through the town followed by marching children each carrying a 'glow baton', children, parents, grannies, granddads carrying candle lit lanterns and young drummers at the rear.

This event coincided with Caithness Promotion Focus, ' Doors Open Days' giving the event maximum publicity for the young people.

Thanks to Wick Youth Club committee and all the volunteers who helped make this event a great success.

Video Clip from this great community event will be available to download soon.
